Radon FAQ

Schedule ServiceWhat is radon?
Radon is a cancer-causing gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in the soil. It can’t be seen, smelled or tasted, so testing is the only way to know if your home has it. The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Learn more about radon.
Is radon common in Ohio?
Yes. The EPA divides the country into three zones by radon potential, and Ohio is a mix of zones 1 and 2, the two highest. It’s estimated that about 1 in every 5 American homes has radon above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L.
How long does a radon test take?
At least 48 hours, the minimum needed for an accurate test. Our monitor takes a reading every hour, and you get the results as soon as we pick it up, followed by an emailed report with an hour-by-hour chart.
What do I need to do during a test?
Keep closed-house conditions: windows and exterior doors stay closed except for normal coming and going, your heating and cooling can run normally, and whole-house or window fans and wood-burning fireplaces shouldn’t be used. Please don’t move or disturb the monitor. See what to expect.
What if my radon level is high?
If your results are at or above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, a radon mitigation system is recommended. All homes have some radon, but the higher the level and the longer the exposure, the greater the risk.
How does a mitigation system work?
A mitigation system pulls radon from beneath your home before it can mix with the air you breathe, and easy entry points like large slab cracks and sump pits are sealed. Installation is typically done in a single day, and we test again afterward to make sure levels are below 4.0 pCi/L. How mitigation works.
How much does radon mitigation cost?
It depends on your home’s layout and whether it’s built on a slab, crawlspace or basement. We offer free estimates: a technician visits, walks you through the installation and answers your questions, and we email you an estimate within a business day.
Do you test apartments and other multi-family buildings?
Yes. Our technicians are certified to test condos, townhouses, apartment buildings and other multi-family structures, following the ANSI-AARST MAMF-2017 protocol that meets HUD requirements. Multi-family radon testing.
Do you seal crawlspaces?
Yes. Crawlspace encapsulation seals your crawlspace with a heavy-duty vapor barrier to block moisture, soil gases and pests, and it can be combined with radon mitigation for full protection.
